DA launched 2024 National Livestock and Poultry Month

The Department of Agriculture (DA) on Monday, October 7, officially launched the National Livestock and Poultry Month at its headquarters in Quezon City.

This initiative underscores the DA’s commitment to enhancing food security, empowering farmers, and promoting sustainability within the livestock and poultry sectors.

With the theme “Masaganang Paghahayupan Tungo sa Bagong Pilipinas,” Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel, Jr. said the initiative is aligned with the administration’s goal of making the agricultural sector globally competitive. He addressed pressing challenges such as transboundary animal diseases, climate change, natural disasters, and fluctuating market prices that pose significant threats to the industry.

In remarks delivered by Undersecretary for Livestock Deogracias Savellano, Secretary Tiu Laurel outlined key measures the DA is implementing to tackle urgent issues, including African Swine Fever (ASF) and Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI).

“To combat these challenges, the DA has introduced ASF vaccines, enacted temporary bans on imports from affected countries, and is enhancing regulations through the DA Inspectorate and Enforcement,” he stated.

The DA chief called for unity within the agriculture sector to adapt new technologies and best practices in animal science and strive for a self-sustaining agricultural industry. “We must continue to work together to keep pace with rapid advancements,” he said.

He also expressed gratitude to DA employees, farmers, and industry leaders for their unwavering dedication, recognizing their crucial role in achieving the administration’s agricultural goals. “Only through collective commitment can we ensure the growth and success of our agricultural sector,” Secretary Tiu Laurel concluded.

The 2024 National Livestock and Poultry Month will take place from October 7 to 11, featuring various programs and seminars focused on the Philippine livestock and poultry industry. ###
