Death toll from ‘Carina,’ rains rises to 48

THE death toll from typhoon “Carina” and two other weather disturbances in the past weeks has increased to 48, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said yesterday.

The NDRRMC also said Carina, tropical depression “Butchoy,” and southwest monsoon rains have affected some 6.2 million individuals in 5,099 barangays in all of the country’s 17 regions.

Two low pressure areas (LPAs) are being monitored by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) but the agency said these are unlikely to intensify into tropical cyclones.

The NDRRMC said the cost of damage to infrastructure and agriculture from the three weather systems has also increased to P5.98 billion.

On the fatalities, it said 22 are from the National Capital Region (NCR), or Metro Manila, and 15 from Calabarzon. Four deaths were reported in Zamboanga Peninsula; two each in Central Luzon and Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM); and one each in Ilocos, Northern Mindanao, and Davao.

Five remained missing — two each in Ilocos and Calabarzon and one in Northern Mindanao.

The combined effects of Carina, Butchoy, and the southwest monsoon have affected 1,662,222 families (6,220,366 individuals), the NDRRMC said.

More than half of the affected population — 983,898 families or 3,358,155 individuals — are in Central Luzon, the NDRRMC said. They are from 1,522 barangays of out of the region’s total 3,102 barangays.

Of the total affected population, 414,210 families (1,724,568 individuals) have been displaced but the number has gone to 249,649 families (1,077,248 individuals) as of yesterday.

The cost of damage to infrastructure was placed at P4.17 billion and to infrastructure, P1.81 billion.

A total 143 cities and municipalities have been placed under state of calamity, including all the 16 cities and one municipality in the NCR.

PAGASA weather specialist Obet Badrina said one of the LPAs has entered the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR). As of yesterday morning, it was some 1,155 km east northeast of extreme northern Luzon.

The other LPA, which is outside the PAR, was in the eastern side of Luzon, he said.
