DepEd to train teachers for ‘Matatag’ curriculum

THE Department of Education will start this week training teachers who will handle the phased implementation of the revised K to 10, or the Matatag curriculum, of the Marcos administration next school year.

“We will start this week the training of trainers for the rollout of the new curriculum,” DepEd Assistant Secretary and deputy spokesperson Francis Cesar Bringas told radio DZBB yesterday.

“All teachers who will handle and teach Kinder and Grades 1, 4 and 7 next school year will undergo training until the end of the current school year,” he added.

The phased implementation of the revised curriculum for Kinder and Grades 1, 4 and 7 levels will start in school year 2024-2025.

The Matatag curriculum will be taught next to Grades 2, 5, and 8 learners in the school year 2025-2026, Grades 3, 6 and 9 in 2026-2027, and Grade 10 in 2027-2028.

Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte earlier said there is a need to revise the K to 12 curricula to enable senior high school graduates to be “competent and job-ready.”

The DepEd is already pilot testing in 35 schools in seven regions of the country the revised K to 10 curriculum that it said targets the decongestion” of the current curriculum to improve the quality of basic education in the country.

Among the revisions in the K to 10 program include reducing the number of competencies and greater emphasis on the development of foundational skills such as literacy, numeracy, and socio-emotional skills for Kinder to Grade 3 learners.

The current curriculum has seven competencies, namely, Mother Tongue, Filipino, English, Mathematics, Araling Panlipunan, MAPEH, and Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao.

However, under the Matatag curriculum, there will be five competencies, namely, Language, Reading and Literacy, Mathematics, Makabansa, and GMRC.

Values and character development will be further intensified in adherence to Republic Act 11476 or the Good Manners and Right Conduct and Values Education Act of 2002.

The revised curriculum will also integrate peace competencies-highlighting the DepEd’s promotion of non-violent actions and the development of conflict resolution skills in learners.
