DOH calls for strict mpox screening in ‘skin-to-skin’ workplaces

THE Department of Health (DOH) is urging business establishments that involve skin-to-skin contact to adopt a strict screening process for its clients and staff members amid the threat of the mpox.

Mpox is a disease transmitted through close and intimate contact, including direct touching, sex, or sharing personal items like towels, beds, clothes. The country has so far recorded 23 mpox cases.

In its “Interim Guidelines for Mpox Prevention and Response in Workplaces and Other High Risk Commercial Establishments,” the DOH said s massage parlors, spas, gyms, barber shops, and salons are among mpox high-risk establishments.

“Workplaces that have frequent and prolonged skin-to-skin contact as part of their legally permitted business are highly encouraged to implement a strict symptom and temperature screening process with the recommended health screening form for both staff and clients before any service is provided,” said the DOH.

“Implementing these comprehensive guidelines in workplaces will enhance overall infection control, creating safer environments, and reducing the burden of communicable and other emerging infectious diseases,” it added.

The health department said individuals, who are suspect, probable, or confirmed mpox cases will be “respectfully denied entry” and advised to seek medical attention.

“Clients with symptoms should be rescheduled, and symptomatic staff should be advised to stay home, and seek urgent medical care from a licensed physician,” it also said.

In addition, the DOH said such workplaces are encouraged to implement “appointment-only systems” to control the flow of clients and prevent overcrowding in waiting areas or service spaces; institutionalize contactless payment methods and digital check-in systems; consider offering services, such as massages, with alternative treatments that require less close contact or can be performed with additional barriers, like having clothes on, or considerable distance; and require clients to wear masks in certain settings, such as during close-contact services or when in communal areas.
