DOH: ‘Siling labuyo’ not a cure for dengue

THE Department of Health yesterday cautioned the public against claims on social media that bird’s eye chili or “siling labuyo” can cure dengue.

“Currently, there is no specific treatment for dengue. Hence, the Department encourages Filipinos that the best way to prevent dengue is to avoid mosquito bites,” the DOH said in an advisory.

The department said it would do well for the public to wear long sleeves and pants to cover the skin and use mosquito lotion and repellent sprays.

It also encouraged the public to immediately consult doctors if they experience dengue symptoms such as nausea, fever, rashes, headache, and muscle and joint pains.

Likewise, the DOH asked communities to get rid of mosquito breeding sites and support fogging in areas where there are dengue outbreaks.

The DOH also appealed to the public to get information from legitimate sources and platforms.

On Wednesday, the DOH Department of warned the public of an expected surge in dengue cases, with the peak projected in July and August.

DOH data showed the number of dengue cases has gone down in recent weeks, with 5,359 cases recorded from April 28 to May 11 and 3,992 cases from May 12 to May 25.

But despite this, the department warned the public not to be complacent, especially with the onset of the rainy season that brings more water in places that can serve as breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
