Eala enters W40 Petange Round of 16

MANILA, Philippines -- Alex Eala is going to the round of 16 of the W40 Petange in Luxembourg after defeating Germany’s Angelina Wirges, 6-3, 6-2, early Wednesday morning (Manila time.)

Eala was simply dominant right from the get-go, jumping to an early 5-2 first set.

The 21-year-old Wirges, however, stole the eighth game after being down 30-15.

A cross-court kill ended the first set in favor of the Filipina.

With the German within striking distance in the second set, 2-3, Eala blanked her the rest of the way.

A service ace ended the match as the ninth seed Filipina tennister is now off to the next round.

Eala won 28 receiving points compared to just 12 for Wirges.

She also slightly won more service points at 34, compared to 28 for the German.

The Filipina, who is currently ranked 204th in the world, will be facing Denmark’s Johanne Svendsen in the round of 16.

The two will be battling on Thursday, Manila time.
