Experts reaffirm dangers of vaping

SUBIC BAY, Zambales — Health experts have reiterated their warning against vaping, as more young people in the country were afflicted with Evali (e-cigarette and vaping product-associated lung injury).

Recently, the country has recorded its first Evali casualty in a 22-year-old Filipino male. There were currently six confirmed local cases of Evali.

In a media conference organized by the Department of Health here in Subic, Dr. Maria Encarnita Limpin, former president of the Philippine College of Physicians, said chemicals in cigarettes were present in juices of electronic cigarettes or vapes.

Samantha Ackary of the Ateneo School of Government (ASOG) and Dr. Maria Encarnita Blanco-Limpin, Philippine Heart Center pulmonologist and former Philippine College of Physicians president, warn the public against the use of vapes, especially by the youth, and the harm these can cause to their health. Ackary showed samples of electronic tobacco and vape products based on an ASOG study and their regulatory implications during a media conference organized by the Department of Health in Subic, Zambales on June 14, 2024. Ackary said that there was a need to implement stricter regulations on flavored cigarettes, cigars and even electronic cigarettes to curb smoking prevalence. Limpin said vaping should not be considered as an alternative to cigarettes as there was no difference in their effects on health, especially on the lungs and heart.
