FFW: No to limited holidays, yes to wage system review

THE Federation of Free Workers (FFW) yesterday expressed opposition to the planned limiting of the number of holidays in the country and pushed for a review of the current wage-setting system.

In a statement, FFW president Sonny Matula said it is unnecessary for Congress to alter the 12 regular holidays and 4 special non-working days in the Philippines.

“With due respect to the Senate, there is no need for a review or for a new law to reduce holidays,” said Matula.

He said under the law, employers can order their employees to report for work on holidays if deemed necessary.

“Employers already have the option to require workers to work on a holiday, provided they pay a premium for the work done on that day,” said Matula.

Instead of tinkering with the country’s roster of holidays, the labor leader said it would be better if the government would review the existing wage-setting system.

“We urge the government to focus on the critical issue of wage reform rather than tinkering with our holidays,” said Matula.

He said a review of the regional wage scheme is necessary to help the struggling labor sector to cope with the soaring prices of basic commodities.

“Our current wage system needs to be overhauled to ensure that all workers, regardless of their location or sector, receive fair and decent wages that allow them to live with dignity,” said Matula.

Earlier, Senate President Francis Escudero said the Senate is studying the possibility of rationalizing the national holidays to make Philippine companies and employees more competitive.
