'Filmmaking is not just a passion but a commitment to say truthful stories'

Renowned independent filmmaker and a prominent figure in the Philippine New Wave cinema, Brilliante Mendoza shared his unique perspective on the craft at IFFI recently.
The Masterclass commenced with an exclusive behind-the-scenes glimpse into the making of Mendoza's acclaimed feature film, 'Ma’Rosa.' Unlike traditional script-driven approaches, Mendoza revealed that he allows the story to guide the film, employing an immersive process of character development.

Known for his innovative approach to filmmaking, Mendoza said that he opts for actual locations to maintain absolute authenticity. Describing his cinematographic style as 'ultra-realistic,' Mendoza employs a handheld camera without a tripod, providing a viewer's perspective intimately connected with the unfolding narrative.
Reflecting on his late entry into filmmaking at the age of forty-five, Mendoza said that he drew inspiration from his extensive background in advertising.

Expressing his faith in the transformative power of cinema, Mendoza stated, "I believe in cinema. I believe that cinema can change lives for the better. If a person connects with a film, it becomes part of his life; that is the power of storytelling."
Mendoza offered advice to aspiring directors, urging them to find themselves as filmmakers and remain true to their craft,"Film-making is not just a passion but a commitment to say

truthful stories."
