Go urges govt to provide more assistance to farmers

AMID pressing economic problems, inflation included, Sen. Bong Go has underscored the critical need for government action to help poor sectors, especially the farmers reeling from the impact of the long dry spell.

In a chance interview on Monday, April 15, after joining the Malasakit sa Kooperatiba event in Sta. Cruz, Laguna, Go pointed out the complex aspects of the economic difficulties.

«There are many factors that we are looking at. First and foremost, the increase in crude oil prices is something we cannot control. Due to the rise in fuel prices… the prices of all goods will [go up],» the senator said in Filipino.

«As for agricultural goods, prices are also rising due to natural and man-made disasters. Currently, we are experiencing El Niño and drought, which are affecting our farmers,» he said.

Go's remark came after reports from the weather bureau indicated that 31 provinces are experiencing drought, severely impacting agricultural productivity and inflating the prices of essential goods.

The senator advocated for enhanced agricultural support for small farmers by providing more agrarian inputs such as fertilizers, pesticides and drought-resistant seeds. He is also promoting free training for farmers.

Go also suggested that the executive branch distribute financial aid directly to farmers and the needy sectors, given the availability of various social programs funded in this year's budget.
