Lady Warriors gain SSL playoff spot
MANILA, Philippines — The University of the East caught the last playoff bus in Pool A while Far Eastern U completed a Pool D sweep in the penultimate day of the Shakey’s Super League (SSL) Collegiate Pre-Season Championship Season 2 elimination round yesterday at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.
The Red Warriors romped past San Sebastian College-Recoletos, 25-18, 25-20, 25-20, for a 2-1 mark as the Lady Tamaraws pulled off a reverse sweep against Ateneo, 22-25, 23-25, 25-20, 25-22, 15-10, for a clean 3-0 slate.
KC Cepada and super rookie Casiey Dongallo fired 14 and 11 points, respectively, to show the way for UE that needed only 73 minutes to knock off San Sebastian in the battle for the No. 2 seed in Pool A led by reigning champion National U.
“I’m glad that in our first time together with UE in the Shakey’s featuring the complete teams from the UAAP and NCAA, we’re able to be in the Top 8. We’re excited. We talked about this possibility,” said UE assistant coach Obet Vital.
