Marcos boosts sports devt

PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has directed the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) to ramp up the implementation of its Five-Year Sports Development Plan to maintain the world-class standing of Filipino athletes.

«This plan aims to address the long-standing concerns of Filipino athletes by encouraging participation in all levels of government and the private sector, ensuring support for our athletes, our national sports associations, and improve participation in sports at every level,» the President said during the grand welcome and awarding ceremony at the Rizal Memorial Stadium Wednesday night for the athletes who competed in the 19th Asian Games.

The sports development plan was created to promote cooperation between government and the private sector in supporting national athletes and the National Sports Associations (NSAs).

It is anchored on the PSC's Six Policy Directions, namely: Sports Governance, Sports Promotion and Awareness, Sports Accessibility, High-Performance Sports, Sports Infrastructure and Support, and Sports Linkages.

«I said this when I addressed our Southeast Asian Games and Asean Para Games medalists: We know and understand that for our athletes to succeed in these competitions, they need all the help that they can get, especially from their government,» Marcos said.

He said his administration is further bolstering sports development by establishing the New Clark City in Pampanga as the country's sports hub and strengthening the partnership of the PSC with other government agencies like the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (Pagcor).

«Our national athletes and those training to represent the country in international sports will also utilize the training facilities of the New Clark City Athletics Stadium and the Aquatics Center for free,» Marcos said.

To tend to athletes who are injured during training and competition, the President directed the Philippine Sports Commission to work with Pagcor and other agencies to strengthen the Medical Scientific Athlete Services unit.

«We need to help our injured athletes so that they recover quickly, and they can get back in the game,» he said.
