Marcos: Government to boost capabilities of Scout Rangers

MANILA, Philippines — President Marcos vowed yesterday to strengthen the capabilities of the Philippine Army’s Scout Rangers to address the emerging threats and security challenges confronting the country.

Speaking during the 73rd anniversary of the First Scout Ranger Regiment in Bulacan, Marcos said the unit’s specialized skills in warfare, counterterrorism and special operations make it “indispensable” to the nation’s security.

“As we bolster our external defense, it is crucial to prioritize capabilities that will significantly contribute to our credible defense posture,” the President said. “To this end, the Department of National Defense will review the Scout Rangers’ capability requirements and pursue options that will enhance our operational capabilities and effectiveness to achieve the desired defense objectives.”

“By providing the necessary resources and support, we will enable the Scout Rangers, including our Special Forces units, to support the armed forces, as it transforms into a stronger and more reliable defense force capable of defending the country against current and emerging threats,” he added.

Marcos said the First Scout Ranger Regiment is a “stalwart defender” that showcased “unparalleled loyalty and soldiery and professionalism.”

“From jungle to urban warfare expertise, our unit has evolved to meet the ever-changing challenges,” he said.

The First Scout Ranger Regiment was formed in November 1950 to address the growing threat of communist insurgency and other security threats.

The elite unit has been involved in key military operations, including the 2013 Zamboanga siege and the battle of Marawi in 2017.

In the same speech, Marcos said the government’s commitment to reconciliation and unity, reflected in the latest amnesty proclamations, aligns directly with the Scout Rangers’ mission.
