Marcos: Govt needs energy, ‘new blood’ of youth leaders

PRESIDENT Marcos Jr. yesterday encouraged the Filipino youth to get more involved in governance and political discourse, saying that the government needs their energy and “new blood” amid the continuing global advancements in technology and cyberspace.

“We have to hear from the young people. We have to hear from the ordinary citizens what is the future that you want? What is the future that you feel we can achieve? And how do you suggest that we do it? These questions are very, very important and these are questions that we ask of the local government, and I promise you, we will listen to those answers,” Marcos said during the oath-taking of the newly elected officers of the Liga ng mga Barangay (LnB) and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) National and Island Representatives held in Malacañang.

The President said that with the Filipino youth becoming the youngest workforce in Asia, averaging at 25 years old, it is important for them to get involved in social debate and governance.

“If they have ideas, they should share it, regardless if the elders listen to them or not,” he said, as he assured them that he and his administration would listen to their ideas and suggestions.

He said that with the advancement of technology and more changes happening in the world, the country needs the intuitive and instinctive knowledge of the youth.

“The future is going to be technology driven, and that is why the natural instinct of younger people, when it comes to technology, is important. It has to be part of all our thinking. It has to be part of all our planning,” Marcos said.

The President also recognized the role of the youth, the SK and barangay officials in governance, the government’s decision-making and planning, and in nation-building.

Marcos said local government officials, especially at the barangay level, are the first responders during emergencies in their areas, are the representatives of the national government to the communities, and the face of the new Philippines and leaders that would bring reforms and quality services to the public.
