MMDA to ‘revisit’ penalty for e-trike ban

MANILA, Philippines — The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority would “revisit” the penalty for users of electronic tricycles and bicycles as well as gasoline-fueled light vehicles caught traversing certain major roads in Metro Manila, acting MMDA Chairman Romando Artes said yesterday.

He said the agency would set up a meeting with local government unit officials to “revisit the penalty to comply with the directive of President Marcos,” who in mid-April ordered the MMDA, LGUs and other concerned government agencies to suspend charging fines and impounding violators’ vehicles.

Marcos said the P2,500 fine for violators, set under MMDA Regulation 2024-002, was “huge.”

Artes said the vehicles were banned from major roads due to “safety and traffic issues” such as their use by minors, who do not carry a driver’s license.

Artes said Metro Manila LGUs would identify alternate routes for e-bikes, e-trikes and tricycles.
