NorthPort's Munzon shines on defense

MANILA, Philippines -- Former PBA No. 1 overall pick Joshua Munzon is now showing his two-way prowess.

The 6-foot-4 Munzon is averaging 2.4 steals per game for the NorthPort Batang Pier.

He is leading the PBA Season 48 Commissioner's Cup in that category.

On Friday night against the Blackwater Bossing, Munzon showcased an all-around game, finishing with a team-high 20 points, four rebounds, four assists, four steals and a block in the 106-89 victory.

With his performance, he helped NorthPort get into the quarterfinals this conference.

Munzon, for his part, said he just wants to show how good he can play defense.

"A lot of people know I can play offense, but, I guess, my defense has not been there. But I think I want to put importance on playing defense," the 28-year-old guard/forward said.

"I know I can get into the passing lanes, get steals, I’m capable of disrupting the defense," he added.

NorthPort head coach Bonnie Tan said he is happy to see Munzon transition to a more defensive-minded player from a shoot-first one.

"I am happy for Josh. His first year, he is somewhat pressured to perform as the number one pick. The expectations may have triggered his below-par performance," Tan said in Filipino.

"We talked before this conference that to lessen the pressure, he should start playing good defense and he'll be getting his minutes, deserving minutes. You cannot perform well or contribute to the team if you're on the bench," he added.

With a balanced lineup and with the sharpshooting Arvin Tolentino in the team, Munzon is averaging 13.2 points per game in 10 games this conference.

"I am happy that the mindset of Josh is defense first, and the offense will follow. That is what's happening with Josh."

NorthPort will face Barangay Ginebra on Sunday, January 7, for its final elimination round game.
