Only half of Baguio voters participated in BSKE — Comelec

BAGUIO CITY — Only half of Baguio’s voters went out to cast their choices for the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan polls, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) -Baguio bared on Sunday.

Comelec-Baguio City election supervisor Lawyer John Paul Martin said that only 89, 962 or 53.01% of the total number of Baguio voters (169,711) cast their votes.

There are 75,700 male voters while 94, 305 are females.

Even the turn-out of the SK polls was a dismal low at 49.52 % or only 23,152 out of the total 46,752 registered youth voters.

Martin blamed the schedule of the polls timed for a long vacation.  He suspects that Baguio City residents could have prioritized family vacations than exercising their choice for leaders in the local government unit.

This prompted Martin to call on the government to schedule the next and succeeding polls not timed for long weekends or vacations to encourage a better turn out of voters.
