Pinoy singer appeals for LGBTQ acceptance

MANILA, Philippines — Singer Ice Seguerra has appealed for understanding and acceptance as the Philippines has yet to enforce laws protecting members of the LGBTQ community.

“Until now there is no law that protects us,” he said yesterday during the opening of the Rainbow Care Caravan in Plaza Moriones in Intramuros, Manila.

House Bill 10176 and Senate Bill 1600 (SOGIESC Equality Act) remain pending in both houses of Congress.

Since coming out in 2000, the transman singer-songwriter said that times have become better for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer community as unlike before, society has gradually recognized their role and contributions.

Seguerra hoped that the support and love given to the community would not be limited during Pride Month.

Organized by the Philippine Information Agency’s Metro Manila office, the Rainbow Care Caravan gathered agencies like the Philippine Health Insurance Corp., National Commission for Senior Citizens and the Philippine National AIDS Council, as well as private partners, to provide services especially for elderly LGBTQ members.

The Golden Bekis also set up a booth featuring products, such as bracelets, made by elderly gays.

Meanwhile, Manila Police District community affairs and development division chief Col. Bogard Arao said military training is open to LGBTQ members.
