Prosecutors told: Keep abreast with new laws

JUSTICE Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla yesterday reminded government prosecutors to keep abreast with new laws and jurisprudence to be more effective and efficient in doing their work.

Remulla also reminded them to always uphold the rule of law.

Remulla issued the reminders as the Department of Justice started the free Mandatory Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) for its prosecutors.

The 5-day convention, which will run up to July 19 at the University of the Philippines, will be participated in by around 365 prosecutors from Regions 1, 2, 3, 4B, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14.

“This activity will surely be of great significance to our prosecutors as they navigate recent laws and jurisprudence,” Remulla said.

“With all the legal complexities now and because laws are constantly changing, we really have to stay updated and grasp any shifts in our fields, the reason for this MCLE,” he added.

Presentations and discussions by experts in the week-long gathering include 2019 Amendments to the Rules on Evidence, Prosecuting Anti-Online Sexual Abuse and Exploitation of Children and Anti-Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation Materials, Gender Laws, Money Laundering, and Forfeiture in Criminal Cases.

The MCLE requires all lawyers to undergo continuing legal education to keep them abreast with recent laws and jurisprudence, maintain ethics in their profession and enhance their standards in the practice of law.
