Remulla: Accelerate disaster risk reduction efforts

MANILA, Philippines — In a powerful call to action, Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla urged local governments in the Asia-Pacific region to accelerate disaster risk reduction efforts, warning that time is of the essence in one of the world's most disaster-prone regions.

Speaking on Monday at the Local and Regional Government Assembly during the 2024 Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (APMCDRR) hosted by Manila and the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction at the Philippine International Convention Center, Remulla emphasized the need for swift, decisive action to mitigate the increasing risks of natural disasters.

«We all need to act now. We have to act fast,» he said.

Remulla outlined the Department of the Interior and Local Government's (DILG) commitment to enhance local government capacity in disaster risk reduction and management and climate change adaptation.

The DILG is responsible for guiding and equipping local government units (LGUs) in their disaster preparedness efforts.

Remulla said 87.87 percent of LGUs have developed their Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Plans, and 71.05 percent have established Local Climate Change Action Plans. Additionally, 67.93 percent of LGUs have contingency plans in place, and 87.33 percent have approved community-based disaster risk reduction plans.
