Salceda pushes responsible reclamation

ALBAY 2nd District Rep. Joey Salceda said the government should not depend on new taxes to pay for the nation's debts but instead harness scientific land reclamation as additional source of revenue.

The House Ways and Means panel head added that the Manila Bay reclamation projects could serve as a fiscal lifeline for the national economy.

Salceda's statement was praised by the Philippine Reclamation Authority (PRA).

«The Committee sessions have been pivotal in clarifying national policies on land reclamation while at the same time prescribing systematic, orderly, and scientific methodologies to evaluating and approving such projects,» the PRA said in a statement.

It added that reclamation projects could generate P23.113 trillion in investments, contribute P1.155 trillion annually in general gross value added and create nearly 580,000 jobs.

The PRA said that besides generating income, reclamation has the potential to expand green spaces and mitigate flooding risks for vulnerable communities.
