Signal No. 1 up in Ilocos Norte due to Typhoon ‘Jenny’

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, October 2) — Portions of Ilocos Norte are now under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 as Typhoon Jenny further intensifies while heading northwest over the Philippine sea, the state weather bureau said.

In an 11 a.m. bulletin, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Signal No. 1 is up in Carasi, Vintar, Burgos, Dumalneg, Bangui, Pagudpud, and Adams in Ilocos Norte.

Meanwhile, Signal No. 1 remains hoisted over Batanes, the Babuyan Islands, Cagayan, and the eastern portion of Isabela, PAGASA said.

Jenny was last spotted 600 kilometers east of Calayan, Cagayan, packing maximum sustained winds of 140 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center, and gustiness of up to 170 kph.

PAGASA said Jenny may reach its peak intensity on Tuesday and will continue to enhance the southwest monsoon, or bahagat, and bring rains over the western portions of Central Luzon, Southern Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao in the next three days.

State meteorologists also said landfall over Batanes is still not ruled out. Jenny is also seen to make landfall over the southern portion of Taiwan on Thursday morning.

Speaking to CNN Philippines’ New Day, weather forecaster Benison Estareja said Jenny is not projected to intensify into a super typhoon, but storm signals may still be hoisted over more areas.

Estareja said Jenny is seen to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Thursday evening or Friday morning.
