Taiwan a province of China – Carlos

PROFESSOR Clarita Carlos, a former national security adviser, said the island of Taiwan is not a sovereign state but only a «province of China.»

Chinese politician, revolutionary and military leader Chiang-kai Shek sought refuge on the island after he was defeated by Communist leader Mao Zedong in 1949. Taiwan was formerly known as Formosa.

«Let us go back to the categorical declaration of our one-China policy: Taiwan is a province of China. There are many historical and other legal basis for why Taiwan is a part of China, so if you analyze the views of Deng Xiaoping and Xi Jinping now, note that Taiwan was never an issue for that matter, they were willing to wait… they have a 5,000-year [history as a] nation here; they are willing to wait,» Carlos told The Manila Times.

She added that it is the United States that was extremely against the idea of Taiwan reuniting with Mainland China.

«Let us continue to uphold what our President (President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.) and previous presidents have declared that Taiwan is a province of China,» Carlos said, noting Marcos once said that China is a «friend, neighbor, and partner» and that there are shared resources with Beijing.

Carlos served as Marcos' national security adviser from June 30, 2022 to Jan. 14, 2023, until she was replaced by Eduardo Año.
