UP, Nagoya University expand PhD program

THE University of the Philippines (UP) and Nagoya University (NU) of Japan have expanded their collaboration for doctorate scholarships for Filipino professionals.

UP System President Angelo Jimenez, UP Los Baños Chancellor Jose Camacho Jr. and NU President Naoshi Sugiyama signed the amended memorandum of agreement (MoA) Monday in the UPLB Campus in Laguna.

First started in the Philippines in 2015, the Transnational Doctoral Programs for Leading Professionals in Asian Countries has been expanded with the new Graduate Schools of Engineering and Environmental Sciences.

Witnessing the event were NU Asian Satellite Campuses Institute (ASCI) Director Akira Yamauchi, ASCI Specially Appointed Prof. Editha Cedicol, Graduate School of International Development Dean Aya Okada, Graduate School of Life and Agricultural Sciences and Faculty of Agriculture Dean Mikio Nakazono, Graduate School of Bioagricultural Sciences Education and International Affairs Vice Dean Satoshi Okura, Department of International Development Cooperation Associate Professor Reiko Kanazawa, Graduate School of Bioagricultural Sciences Asia Satellite Campus Dean Akira Yamauchi, ASCI Designated Supervisor Junko Hatcho, ASCI Leader Naoko Okada, International Affairs Division Manager Masako Ide, and International Communications Office Director Matthew Linley.

After the MoA signing, an entrance ceremony for the new Filipino doctorate students was held at the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (Searca) Umali Auditorium.

Japan Information and Culture Center Director Shigehiro Matsuda and Department of Science and Technology Science Education Institute (DoST-SEI) Director Josette Biyo were also in attendance.

In his address, Matsuda celebrated the valuable partnership between NU and UPLB. He expressed his best wishes for the enduring success of this collaboration as it continues to provide public officers with the opportunity to deepen their knowledge in international development and bioagricultural sciences.

On Tuesday, the contingent, led by Sugiyama, paid a courtesy call to Japanese Ambassador Kazuhiko Koshikawa at his residence in North Forbes Park, Makati City.
