USC-North Alumni’s “Last Dance” basketball tourney fires off today | The Freeman
CEBU, Philippines — The “Last Dance” of the University of San Carlos-North Alumni Basketball Club (USC-NABC) billed as the Cong. Bingo Bagtik Matugas Cup will kick off today at the USC North Campus gym along General Maxilom Avenue in Cebu City.
Before the games, a simple opening ceremony will take place at 1:30 p.m. to be graced by Surigao del Norte Rep. Francisco Jose “Bingo” F. Matugas II and Rev. Fr. Rogelio N. Bag-ao, SVD, the Provincial Superior of SVD-Philippines Southern Province.
In all, 30 teams spread in four divisions will see action in the tournament spearheaded by the USC North Alumni Affairs headed by their president Ryan Villaflores.
Also part of the organizing committee are Lolito Belonguel (VP Internal), Ernest Evangelista (VP External), Kevin Laurel (treasurer), Joshua Mah (secretary), Ian Callet (PRO/ballclub head), Galimar Largo (school coordinator) and Jonathan Saso (commissioner).
Division 1 features players from batches 1982 to 1995, Division 2 from batches 1996 until 2003, Division 3 from batches 2004 to 2010, and Division 4 from batches 2011 to 2018.
They will play in a single round robin format. The top two qualifiers per division will enjoy twice-to-beat advantage in the crossover semifinals. The winners will clash in the finals, which is a best-of-three series.
Games will be played from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Sundays. — (FREEMAN)
