Voter registrants reach 2.2M

IN just two months, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) received around 2.2 million voter applications for registration.

Comelec spokesman John Rex Laudiangco said roughly 1 million are first-time voters.

With this turnout, Laudiangco said that the poll body expects to reach the target of 3 million new registered voters by Sept. 30, 2025.

«Let's continue to encourage those who have not yet registered that their voice is very important,» he said. «All Filipinos who are qualified to vote should register so that your decision can be heard and counted in the 2025 elections.»

Laudiangco also reminded overseas workers that they have the right to vote «and to exercise this right, they must register.»

He said the Comelec will conduct for the first time voter registration on April 25 in Sitio Kapihan, in the town of Socorro, Surigao del Sur.

Meanwhile, Laudiangco said the Comelec plans to delist party-list organizations that failed to secure a seat in the House of Representatives in the two most recent elections.

«We are checking if they represent the sector they would want to represent and if they comply with the requirements of the Party-list Act and the decision of the Supreme Court,» he added.

Under Republic Act 7941, or the Party-list System Act, only parties, organizations, or coalitions registered with the Comelec may participate in the party-list elections.

The registration of a party-list may be canceled if it fails to participate in the last two preceding elections or fails to obtain at least 2 percent of the votes cast under the party-list system in the two preceding elections.
