2 dead, 3 injured as military truck rams into Christmas shoppers in Davao City

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, December 24) – Two people were killed while three others were injured after a man rammed a military truck into Christmas Eve shoppers at Bangkerohan Market in Davao City Sunday morning.

According to the report of the Armed Forces of the Philippines — Eastern Mindanao, Task Force Davao's KM450 truck was parked at the market with its engine running when the man identified as Crenenandy Cadiente boarded the truck and rammed it into shoppers and other parked vehicles in the area.

Taske Force Davao was at the market to conduct security operations.

In a statement, AFP-Eastern Mindanao said the victims were brought to the Southern Philippines Medical Center.

The result of Cadiente’s mental health evaluation is yet to be released, it added.

Eastern Mindanao commander Lt. Gen. Greg Almerol expressed his condolences to the families of the victims.

“While this incident is isolated, it is unfortunate that it happened while we are preparing for a festive celebration of Christmas,” he said.

“We are closely working with the Davao City Police Office, and the San Pedro Police Precinct who are on top of the situation,” Task Force Davao said in a separate statement.
