BuCor releases 108 more inmates
MANILA, Philippines — A total of 108 inmates from prison and penal farms under the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) were released a day before Christmas.
This brings to 1,093 the total number of persons deprived of liberty freed this month after 985 inmates were released on Wednesday.
BuCor chief Gregorio Catapang Jr. said the number exceeded the 1,000 inmates that the agency expected to release.
“It’s a nice Christmas gift for the inmates and their families who will be celebrating together this holiday season. Our target number of releases this December was 1,000, but we exceeded that,” Catapang said.
An additional 200 prisoners will be released before the year ends, he said.
The release of the inmates is part of the “Bilis Laya” program implemented by the BuCor among those who have been acquitted, released on probation or parole or have served their minimum or maximum sentence.
