CECABA Basketball: Batch 1978/84/89, Batch 2001 reach division finals | The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — The Pilipinas Shell Batch 1978/84/89 and Cebu Lucky Machinery, Inc. Batch 2001 barged into division finals of the Cebu Eastern College Alumni Basketball Association’s 17th Dr. Chen Lieh Fu Memorial Cup at CEC’s Chiang-kai Shek Gym.

Ryan Mendez dropped a season-high 25 points while Go chipped in 10 markers as the Shell-backed squad booted out Foodies Junction Corp. Batch 1970s/82/86/87 in decisive fashion, 58-43, to set up a best-of-three showdown with KNM & Toxic Wheels Batch 1988 for the Division A crown.

Main man Chester Cokaliong and reliable big man Sammy Sia also made their presence felt, combining for 13 points as they never looked back after cruising to a blistering 14-3 start.

On the other hand, Batch 2001 completed its stunning upset of the twice-to-beat Tiger Tank Batch 1995 via a close 37-34 decision in overtime to advance to the Division B championship.

Paul Gabatan netted 12 points while Eric Cabana and Aylwin Ong conspired for 11 points for Batch 2001, which arranged a title clash with Fuente Oro Business Suites Batch 1994/99.

In Division C, Northern Star Trading Batch 2011/2012 drew first blood against 5J’s Eatery Batch 2007/2008/2009, 71-66, in their race-to-2 finals.

Rex Villarosa bannered five Batch 2011/2012 players in double figures with 17 points. Marven Bauya and BJ Zosa posted an identical 13 points while Mar Genesis Quisagan and John Lucios Avalon contributed 10 points each underscoring their balanced attack.

Meanwhile, Shann Christopher Tan cashed in 19 points, Glendel Calledo scored 15, while Jan Paolo Yu and Noel Joseph Cisneros added 10 points as HELM Construction & Supplies Batch 2014 pounded Amorina Cleaning Services Batch 2013, 86-72, to settle for third place in Division C.
