DSWD vows to safeguard workers' welfare

TO mark Labor Day on Wednesday, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) reiterated its commitment to the safety and well-being of the country's labor force, including child workers.

«Labor Day not only signifies the contributions of workers but also underscores our collective responsibility to safeguard the rights and welfare of our workforce and the children involved in labor,» Assistant Secretary Irene Dumlao said.

While Labor Day appreciates the workforce's enormous contributions, Dumlao said it also serves as a reminder of the importance and rights of every worker, including child laborers.

«The DSWD stands at the forefront of the battle against child labor, recognizing that every child deserves the opportunity to thrive, learn, and play in a safe and nurturing environment,» the official said.

From 2021 to 2023, the DSWD treated about 10,192 child laborers through its Strategic Help Desks for Information, Education, Livelihood, and Other Developmental Interventions (Shield Against Child Labor).

Data showed that 1,986 Shield recipients were assessed and reintegrated into their families and communities.

«Through the local help desk established under the program, support services from various agencies for child laborers and their families are readily available to ensure immediate and accessible developmental intervention on the ground,» Dumlao said.

The child laborers received holistic and immediate community interventions, including educational assistance, cash aid through the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation program, the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program, the Sustainable Livelihood Program, DSWD case management, and referrals to other agencies.
