Flu-like cases down from holiday season

THE Department of Health (DOH) yesterday reported a downward trend in influenza-like illness (ILI) cases.

From January 1 to 14, the DOH said, 4,279 ILI cases were reported nationwide.

The number is 15 percent lower compared to the 6,266 ILI cases recorded from December 17 to 31.

There was also a decline in the number of ILI patients, compared to the 7,356 cases recorded from December 3 to 16.

ILI is defined by the World Health Organization as an acute respiratory infection presenting with cough, sore throat, and a measured temperature of 38 °C and above.

The most common detected causes of ILI in the Philippines are influenza (A and B), SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19), and human rhinovirus (common cold).

Despite the downtrend in ILI cases, the DOH is encouraging the public to use layers of protection such as masking, ensuring adequate ventilation, as well as getting vaccinated.

“Everyone is encouraged to perform individual self-assessment and, as needed, employ layers of protection,” said the DOH. – Gerard Naval
