Inclusion of PH in ‘Whitelist’ of IMO welcomed by DMW
A GLOBAL validation of Filipino seafarers.
This was how the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) described the inclusion of the Philippines in the “Whitelist” of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), which identifies countries compliant with the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW).
“Inclusion on the IMO Whitelist is a testament to our ongoing efforts in refining and elevating the skills of our maritime workforce,” DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac said in a statement.
“This recognition underscores the country’s commitment to upholding the highest seafarer qualifications, competencies, and skills standards. It is a global validation of our Filipino seafarers’ exceptional abilities,” he added.
He said the inclusion in the “Whitelist” is also a recognition of the sacrifices of Filipino seafarers.
“We deeply admire the dedication and expertise of our modern-day heroes, who navigate the world’s oceans,” said Cacdac.
He said they believe that such recognition will also lead to more Filipinos being employed by international maritime firms.
“This milestone paves the way for secure employment and continued employability for Filipino seafarers,” said Cacdac.
Earlier, the Maritime Industry Authority reported that the Philippines has been included in the IMO’s Whitelist.
Filipino seafarers are considered the world’s most preferred shipping crew as they constitute an estimated 30 percent of the global maritime workforce.
