Lady Spikers dominate Lady Warriors

MANILA, Philippines -- The La Salle Lady Spikers showcased their mastery and drubbed the UE Lady Red Warriors, 25-21, 25-18, 25-10, in the UAAP Season 86 women’s volleyball tournament Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

Angel Canino led the defending champions with 17 points, with 16 coming from attacks. Shevana Laput added nine points for La Salle.

After a tough first set, the Lady Spikers breezed through in the second and third set.

In the final frame, the lead grew to as much as 16 points, 22-6, after a service ace by Amie Provido.

An attack from the backrow by UE rookie Casiey Dongallo halted the run, 22-7.

Back-to-back points by La Salle capped by an off-the-block attack by Shevana Laput brought the Lady Spikers to the match point, 24-7.

UE then tried to claw back and inched closer, 24-10.

However, a service error by Shamel Fernandez ended UE's misery, 25-10.

The tough defense of La Salle contained the high-scoring Dongallo to a career-low of 15 points.

Kayce Balingit seconded Dongallo with three.

The two teams are now on opposite sides of the standings, as La Salle rose to 4-1. UE, on the other hand, dropped to 1-4.

UE will try to turn things around against NU, while La Salle is aiming to continue its winning streak against the UP Fighting Maroons.

Both games will be on Sunday, March 10, at the same venue.
