Manila orders liquor ban from Jan. 8-10 for Traslacion

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, January 5) — The City of Manila announced it will impose a liquor ban from Jan. 8 to 10 to promote peace and order during the Feast of the Black Nazarene.

Mayor Maria Sheilah «Honey» Lacuna-Pangan issued the executive order on Friday, prohibiting the consumption of liquor and other alcoholic beverages in public places, such as streets and alleys.

The sale of such products will also be banned in Quiapo during the same period, particularly within the 500-meter radius of the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene where the city will commemorate the religious feast on Jan. 9.

This year marks the return of the grand procession of the 400-year-old image of the Black Nazarene or Traslacion after a three-year break due to COVID-19.

Authorities said some 16,000 policemen will be deployed for the feast to ensure the safety of devotees, which they expect to hit around two million people.
