MTRCB pushes responsible media consumption

THE Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) held its Responsableng Panonood Family and Media Summit in Quezon City on Thursday to promote responsible media consumption among Filipinos.

«In this digital age, the media landscape is evolving faster than ever before. As the chair of MTRCB and, more importantly, as a mother, I understand the challenges that come with guiding our children through this digital age,» MTRCB Chairman Diorella Sotto-Antonio said in her opening remarks.

The «Responsableng Panonood,» or Responsible Viewership campaign, was launched by MTRCB in 2023, in line with the directive of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to strengthen information literacy in the Philippines.

Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte said adults should guide how children consume media content in the digital age.

«We welcome this discussion on responsible media consumption as a crucial development. By empowering adults with sufficient knowledge, we equip them to be more discerning about the content we expose their children to,» Belmonte said.

Broadcast journalist Korina Sanchez said moderation and content management were crucial in molding a population into responsible media consumers.

«It is crucial to strike a balance between screen time and physical activities. The kind and quality of contents our children consume matter greatly,» Sanchez said.

«Let us work toward a balanced and enriching environment where children can thrive both online and offline,» she added.
