NDRRMC: P738M infrastructure damage in Mindanao floods, landslides

MANILA, Philippines — Flooding and landslides in Mindanao caused around P738.6 million in infrastructure damage, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said Sunday.

According to the latest report from the NDRRMC, infrastructure damage in Caraga and Davao region was estimated at P473 million and 265.6 million, respectively.

Relentless downpours triggered floods and landslides that damaged approximately 1,344 houses across Northern Mindanao, Davao Region, and Caraga.

The NDRRMC reported that over 1.38 million people in the southern Philippines were affected, with 352,272 displaced from their homes.

Based on the disaster agency’s report, 22 were reportedly killed due to floods and landslides. It also said that 11 people were injured, while two were missing.

However, a separate tally by the provincial government of Davao de Oro showed that 37 people died after a landslide hit Brgy. Masara, a gold-mining village in Maco town. According to the local government, 32 individuals sustained injuries, while 63 were still missing.

A massive landslide buried a bus terminal and 55 houses near a gold mine of Apex Mining Co. Tuesday night.

The government has so far provided P169.2 million in assistance to affected residents. — Gaea Katreena Cabico with report from Agence France-Presse
