PH votes for UN resolution for ceasefire in Gaza

(UPDATE) THE Philippines voted in favor of the United Nations resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza «to halt the loss of life and suffering» in the Palestinian enclave under heavy bombardment by Israel.

Philippine Permanent Representative to UN Ambassador Antonio Lagdameo explained the Philippines' position during the 10th emergency special session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA).

«We are deeply concerned about the humanitarian situation in Gaza,» Lagdameo told the UNGA.

The Philippines believes that a humanitarian ceasefire in the Gaza Strip «is crucial to halt the loss of life and suffering,» he said on Tuesday (Wednesday in Manila).

«This ceasefire is a necessary step to facilitate the delivery of urgent humanitarian aid to all affected civilians, irrespective of their affiliation,» Lagdameo said.

He said that while the Philippines condemns the October attacks by Hamas militants on Israel, the Philippines «emphasizes adherence to International Humanitarian Law, especially the principles of proportionality and distinction in response to security threats.»

«It is imperative that any military action considers the impact on civilians and strives to minimize, if not eliminate, collateral damage,» Lagdameo said.

The Philippines called on all parties «to comply with their obligations under international law, particularly regarding the protection of civilians, especially women and children.»

«Upholding these laws is essential in ensuring the safety and dignity of all individuals affected by this conflict,» Lagdameo said.

«Finally, the Philippines seeks to contribute to a solution that respects the rights and needs of both Palestinian and Israeli civilians,» he said.

«We advocate for a peaceful resolution that upholds international law and leads to lasting peace and security in the region,» Lagdameo added.

Four Filipinos were killed during the October 7 Hamas attack, identified as Angelyn Aguirre, Loreta Alacre, Grace Cabrera and Paul Vincent Castelvi.

The Philippines thanked Israel for agreeing to the conditions which facilitated the release of more hostages, including Noralin Babadilla, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said.
