PNP beefs up crackdown vs illegal firearms, syndicates for ‘25 polls

THE PNP has started preparations for next year’s national and elections, including intensified operations against private armed groups (PAGs) and loose firearms, police chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil said yesterday.

“Our commitment is to safeguard the democratic process and ensure that the upcoming elections are conducted in a secure environment,” Marbil said.

Marbil said the PNP has outlined plans to target PAGs, loose firearms and even illegal drug syndicates, through comprehensive intelligence operations, community cooperation and strict law enforcement.

“By cracking down on illegal firearms, drug syndicates, and armed groups, we aim to protect our citizens and uphold the rule of law,” he said, adding: “I urge the public to support our efforts and report any illegal activities to help us achieve our goal of a safe and fair election.”

In a statement, the PNP said it will be working closely with local government units and other law enforcement agencies in the campaign against PAGs, loose firearms and drug syndicates.

It noted past reports that drug syndicates have bankrolled the candidacies of some candidates to strengthen their stronghold in areas where the candidates are running.

The police force said it would set up checkpoints, and deploy additional policemen to identified election areas of concern.

“Illegal firearms and private armed groups pose a significant threat to public safety and the integrity of our elections. By removing these threats, we are not only ensuring a safer campaign period but also instilling confidence in our electoral system,” said Marbil.

“Together, we can uphold the rule of law and safeguard our democracy,” said Marbil.
