Some cars parked for 10 years at NAIA

MANILA, Philippines —  The operator of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport has uncovered 20 vehicles abandoned at the NAIA parking lot, with some having been there as far back as 2014.

The New NAIA Infrastructure Corp. (NNIC) yesterday made a final call to the owners to reclaim the cars before these are towed and impounded.

The NNIC said it is waiving penalties against the owners.

The concessionaire said it is taking action to remove these vehicles to free up parking space for passengers.

The NNIC said the abandoned cars pose health and security risks to travelers.

“These vehicles are taking up space that should be available for passengers. They are also a security and safety concern, especially in their deteriorating states,” the NNIC said.

To retrieve the cars, claimants need to show proof of ownership and a valid identification card.

All unrecovered vehicles will be towed to government-owned facilities, the NNIC said.

The NAIA operator said the number of abandoned vehicles may go up as it sweeps the parking areas across all terminals of the airport.

The NNIC has started collecting higher parking fees at the country’s main gateway.

The cost of overnight parking quadrupled to P1,200, from P300 for cars. Motorcycles and buses are now charged P480 and P2,400, respectively.

Parking fees for the first two hours went up to P50 for cars, P20 for motorcycles and P100 for buses.
