Student duped of Rs 13.5 lakh over medical seat in Philippines

PUNE: The Swargate police are investigating a 21-year-old student's complaint accusing a man from Andhra Pradesh of cheating her and her friend of Rs 13.5 lakh. The accused had promised them admission in a medical college in the Philippines, but failed to do so.
The incident happened between June 2019 and October 2021. The student filed an application with the police and post verification an FIR was lodged on Thursday under sections 420(fraud), 406(criminal intimidation) and 507(criminal intimidation by anonymous communication) of the IPC.
Assistant inspector of Swargate police station Ashwini Bavache, said the student had finished her HSC graduation in 2019 in the science stream. She met the accused through a known person and developed a friendship with him.
Bavache said, "The man told her he would help her secure a seat to a Doctor of Medicine (MD) course in the Philippines. Her parents paid Rs13.50 lakh in several instalments by cash and via RTGS transactions, but he failed to help her."

The man later told the victim's parents that he would help secure a seat in medical college in Tamil Nadu, but once again nothing happened.
"Later the student took admission in a BSc course but gave up her education following the death of her parents. She once again asked the man to repay the money, but instead he threatened her with dire consequences," Bavache added.
