‘Super Spelling Bee’ latest DepEd move to boost education program

VICE President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte yesterday said the department is bringing its education programs closer to the public with the help of a popular mall chain.

Duterte announced that officials of SM Supermalls paid her a courtesy visit and disclosed their plans to stage “Super Spelling Bee” contests for public and private school students in their malls.

“They informed us of their plans to launch a Super Spelling Bee contest that will be participated by learners in public and private schools,” Duterte said.

“It aims to interest the mind of the young people amid the digital age on correct spelling which is important for proper communications,” Duterte added.

Aside from this, she said SM officials were also receptive to the idea that senior high school students should be allowed to do “immersion” in their establishments.

“We also talked about a possible partnership between the Department of Education and SM Supermalls so that K to 12 students can do their immersion and be given the chance to be employed in their establishments,” Duterte said.

She said she also invited the officials to participate in the ongoing review of the curriculum for Grades 11 and 12 of the senior high school program.

She reiterated that everyone is welcome to lend their hand in addressing the challenges facing the country’s basic education sector.

“The Department is open to anyone willing to work with us to improve and enhance the quality of basic education in our country,” she added.

Duterte had earlier said there is a need to revise the K to 12 curriculum to enable senior high school graduates to be “competent and job-ready.”

The DepEd is already pilot testing in 35 schools in seven regions of the country the revised K to 10 curriculum that targets the decongestion” of the current curriculum to improve the quality of basic education in the country.

The revised K to 10 curriculum will also allot more time for Mathematics, Science, English, Reading, and Values Formation subjects.

The revised curriculum for Grades 11 and 12 is scheduled to be launched this year.
