Tripura CM congratulates woman athlete for Philippines achievement

AGARTALA: Tripura chief minister Manik Saha on Saturday congratulated Mamata Nath, a woman athlete from Kanchanpur in north Tripura, who bagged a silver medal in the Asia Masters Athletics Championships being held in the Philippines.
"Not only Mamata, but several sports and film talents have proven their genius recently at the national and international levels, which encourages our youngsters and makes us proud.

We are desperately trying to build international standard sports infrastructure to nurture the budding talents," Saha said.
He added that Mamata secured the silver medal in the pole vault. This is the first time any athlete from Tripura has secured silver in this game outside the country. She used to practice with bamboo-made poles. Despite all odds, she gave an outstanding performance, Saha said.
On the first day, Tripura athlete Mithali Debnath won gold in 1500 metres running in the 50-54 years age group and silver in 800 metres running. On the second day, the state's athlete secured a bronze medal. Altogether 11 athletes from Tripura showcased their extraordinary performance at the event, sports officials said.

Meanwhile, Sujit Debbarma, a young filmmaker from Tripura, won the 69th National Film Award for producing the best anthropological documentary - Fire on Edge. President Droupadi Murmu in a ceremonial function in New Delhi recently felicitated him.
