UV Lancers shoot for 10-0 sweep in CESAFI cage wars | The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — The defending champions University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers shoot for a rare 10-game sweep as the elimination round of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) Season 23 Men’s Basketball Tournament winds up today at the Cebu Coliseum.

Still perfect at 9-0, the Lancers of coach Gary Cortes are already assured of the No.1 seeding and a twice-to-beat incentive heading into the Final Four.

But they still have a business to take care against the third-ranked University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers in their 5 p.m. clash.

In the other collegiate duel, the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars will collide with the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) Wildcats at 3:30 p.m.

Regardless of the outcome, the 6-3 Jaguars are bound to finish at No.4 going into the semifinals.

In the juniors division, the USJ-R Baby Jaguars and the University of Cebu Lapu-Lapu Mandaue (UCLM) Baby Webmasters, both sporting 8-1 records, figure in a crucial match at 2 p.m., with the winner clinching the top spot and more importantly avoid a semis battle against reigning titleholders Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagles.

On the other hand, the USPF Baby Panthers and the University of San Carlos (USC) Baby Warriors, at the tailend of standings with 1-8 cards, hope for a graceful exit as they lock horns in the 12:30 p.m. opener. — (FREEMAN)
