33 tons of trash collected from Metro Manila cemeteries

MANILA, Philippines — The annual Filipino tradition of Undas or visits to the dead in Metro Manila last week generated around 33 tons of waste, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) reported yesterday.

Personnel from the agency’s Metro Parkway Clearing Group collected an equivalent of 10 trucks full of garbage from 29 cemeteries around Metro Manila from Oct. 26 to Nov. 2, the MMDA said in a statement.

This year’s figures were higher than the 24.2 tons or seven trucks of garbage gathered during the observance of Undas in 2022, the MMDA noted.

The city government of Manila, however, said it collected 107 truckloads or 287 metric tons of waste from the Manila North and South Cemeteries from Oct. 28 to Nov. 2.

The Manila North Cemetery generated 61 truckloads or 171 metric tons of trash while 45 trucks or 116 metric tons of garbage came from the Manila South Cemetery.

Among the waste collected from cemeteries were dried leaves and branches, used food packs, wrappers and plastic packaging.
