Drag racer injures cop, surrenders

MANILA, Philippines — A 23-year-old man surrendered on Thursday after he injured a police officer who tried to arrest him for allegedly taking part in a drag race in Quezon City.

Carl Andre Perez, in a Honda Civic, and another driver “were preparing for a drag racing contest” at the corner of Commonwealth and Mindanao Avenues in Barangay Pasong Putik Proper at around 2:10 a.m. on Nov. 23, the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) said in a statement yesterday.

The noise caused by the accelerating cars caught the attention of police officers from the QCPD Station 16’s tactical motorcycle riding unit (TMRU).

Pat. Selvin Razon approached Perez’s car to pull him over but Perez sped off, dragging Razon for an estimated 500 meters, station commander Lt. Col. Reynaldo Vitto said.

With the help of his father, Perez surrendered to officials of Barangay Kaligayahan at past 9 a.m. yesterday, .

Police retrieved in San Mateo, Rizal the car Perez used in the drag race, the QCPD added.

Razon is recovering at home from bruises and abrasions, Vitto said.

The QCPD said it would charge Perez with frustrated murder, resistance, alarm and scandal, disobedience to an agent of a person in authority and Batas Pambansa Bilang 33, which penalizes “acts inimical to the public interest and national security involving petroleum or petroleum products.”

In an interview with GMA News, Perez claimed he mistook the policeman for a robber since Razon wore an all-black attire. Vitto said Razon was in a black fatigue uniform prescribed for TMRU personnel.
