Chinese wine lessens plastic waste by 49%

VINO Kulafu, the Chinese wine produced by Ginebra San Miguel Inc. (GSMI), is reducing plastic waste in its packaging.

Starting June 1, it will have a smaller cap seal, reducing its plastic use to about 50 percent. This initiative will reduce its annual total plastic footprint by almost half, or 49 percent, equivalent to 11 metric tons each year.
Vino Kulafu's (350 milliliters) plastic Seal-O-Band will be shorter and its thickness reduced, making it 0.22 grams lighter.

GSMI sustainability manager Manny Guimbal said that the wine's «smaller and lighter seal» is a «testament» to their commitment to «integrating sustainability throughout our operations.»
At the same time, according to GSMI marketing manager Ron Molina, they will ensure that «consumers continue to enjoy the same great taste and health benefits from the 12 Chinese herbs. We are committed to continuous innovation, including finding sustainable solutions without sacrificing quality.»
The initiative marks the beginning of GSMI's many efforts to lessen the use of plastic in its product line.

In the next few months, other GSMI brands, including its flagship brand Ginebra San Miguel, will follow.
