Group joins battle vs online predators

SAVE the Children Philippines said it will join government's efforts in eradicating threats against children online.

The group has commended President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. for intensifying government action against online sexual abuse or exploitation of children (Osaec) and child sexual abuse or exploitation materials (Csaem).

«Save the Children commends the President's call for the government to intensify its efforts against [Osaec]. We are also happy that the President notices that this is a problem that needs more attention, especially at a time when cases of child abuse and exploitation are worsening,» Save the Children Philippines Child Protection Manager Jerly Villanada said in a TV interview on Friday.

Villanada added that information drive against online predators should start in families and communities.

«We hope the government could invest more in informing families and communities on the ill effects of Osaec and the right use of the internet. Children should be taught safe usage of the internet and how to report to authorities online threats,» she said in Filipino.

Villanada added that since Osaec is a «borderless crime,» Save the Children Philippines agrees with the President that it requires a holistic solution.

The Philippine National Police said it is battling online predators through the Philippine Internet Crimes Against Children Center, a composite force of local and international law enforcement agencies.
