Laax crew members safe

THIRTEEN Filipino crew members of the bulk carrier Laax were reported safe after the vessel was attacked by Houthi rebels on Tuesday while traversing the Yemeni coast.

In a statement, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) said there were 13 Filipino crew members and one Ukrainian seaman aboard the vessel which it did not identify.

“The DMW is communicating with the shipping and manning agencies, and monitoring the safety and condition of our Filipino seafarers,” it said.

The vessel sustained some damage from four missiles launched by Houthi rebels as the ship was traversing the Yemeni coast near Hodeidah, the DMW said.

“The vessel is continuing its voyage to its next port of call,” it added.

The DMW said it is in contact with the families of the 13 seafarers for any assistance they may need. – Gerard Naval
