Cybercrime cases drop by 36%

CYBERCRIME incidents and cases dropped by over 36 percent during the first half of 2024 as compared during the same period last year, according to the Philippine National Police (PNP) – Anti-Cybercrime Group (ACG).

In a statement, the PNP-ACG said it has recorded a total of 8,177 cybercrime incidents during the 1st semester of 2024, a 36.16 percent decline when compared to the 12,808 cybercrime incidents reported during the 1st semester of 2023.

It said the decline in cybercrime incidents is evident even in the three most prevalent crimes online.

The PNP-ACG said online selling scams dropped dramatically from 3,468 to 1,613 cases, followed by investment/tasking scams decreasing from 1,001 to 650 cases, and debit/credit card fraud declining from 736 to 528.

The PNP-ACG said the decrease in cybercrime cases can be attributed to the proactive actions of the agency.

“We are deploying more resources and enhancing our capabilities to tackle these crimes head-on. Our goal is to protect our citizens not just in the physical world but also in the digital realm,” said PNP chief Gen Rommel Marbil.
