CEBU, Philippines —  The defending champions University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers and the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters kept their unbeaten records intact in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) Season 23 Men’s Basketball Tournament last Saturday at the Cebu Coliseum.

Behind the scintillating 30-point show of the vastly improved Albert John “AJ” Sacayan, the Lancers outclassed the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars, 88-62, in a battle of undefeated teams.

The sharpshooting Sacayan dropped 22 points in the first half, helping the Lancers built an commanding 51-30 lead at the break.

It was cruise control for the Lancers from there onwards resulting into a 26-point blowout of the baffled Jaguars.

Ivo Salarda chipped in 16 markers as the Lancers snatched the solo lead in the college division standings with an immaculate 4-0 slate.

Elmer Echavez cashed in 16 points while Karl Cabulao and Jake Engbino connived for 23 points but to no avail as the Jaguars saw their four-game winning streak come to a screeching halt.

The Webmasters, on the other hand, remained unscathed after three starts with an 84-68 thrashing of the Cebu Roosevelt Memorial Colleges (CRMC) Mustangs.

Promising rookie Maverick Eligoyo showed the way for the Webmasters with 13 points laced with five rebounds, one assist, and an amazing five steals. Jhiey Paraldo scored 12 while Regie Dajab added 10 points as UC joined the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers at second place with identical 3-0 records.

The Webmasters were in full command since cruising to a 46-33 advantage at halftime.

The Mustangs trimmed the deficit down to a single digit, 61-53, but the Webmasters went strong in the windup to thrash CRMC by 16 points at the final buzzer.

James Gelig and Redjhee Recimento finished with 12 points each for the Mustangs, who suffered their third consecutive loss after hurdling their league debut against the Felipe R. Verallo Foundation College (FRVFC) Blue Dragons.
